About The Organisation:
The George Institute for Global Health was
established in Sydney in 1999 as a not-for-profit organization
dedicated to the prevention and management of non-communicable diseases and
injury, through domestic and international programs. The institute is a legally
independent institution affiliated with Peking University in Beijing, and the
University of Sydney Faculty of Medicine in Sydney. The Goerge Institute for
Global Health has offices in Sydney and Beijing and will shortly open an office
in Hyderabad, India.
Our mission is
to find solutions to common health problems through excellence and thought
leadership in research, and translating that research into policy, practice and
capacity building. In achieving that mission, we are committed to ensuring the
integration of good business practices throughout all our operations.
The
institute has grown rapidly since its inception, and currently employs over
250 staff at
its headquarters in Sydney and approximately 40 staff in its Beijing
office. Research operations are conducted at approximately 400 centres in more
than 30 countries worldwide. While Asia is a major focus, The Goerge Institute
for Global Health is also active throughout Europe, North America, and
Australasia.
The George Institute for Global Health is
made up of several divisions and programs that oversee numerous large-scale
international and regional projects funded by a diverse range of sponsors, both
public and private. The
research portfolio of the institute includes randomized trials of new treatment
and prevention strategies, surveys, and observational studies of the causes and
outcomes of disease and injury. The current global research budget of the
institute is approximately $25-30 million per year. Research revenue comes from
national and international medical research agencies, government, private
sponsors and industry. All of the institute’s research is initiated by academic
staff of the institute or colleagues at partner institutions including the
University of Oxford, the University of Pittsburgh, Peking University and the
University of Melbourne.

international health policy and practice in China.
The Goerge Institute
for Global Health is dedicated to the recruitment, development, and retention
of the best people from around the world. The pursuit of academic, scientific
and operational excellence in a “can do” culture is actively promoted in all
our activities.Background: The Research Fellow will be responsibile
for economic evaluations of current and new studies, evidence synthesis,
economic modelling studies, and health outcomes research, all linked to
informing health care and policy decision making. There will also be
opportunities for the Research Fellow to be involved with other research and
activities conducted in the R&D Division at The George Institute for Global
Health, China. There is potential for this role to grow into a leader in
economic evaluations of healthcare programs in China.
Key Accountabilities (focusing on
economic evaluations):
- Have a key role in the research development, implementation,
and dissemination of relevant current or new studies
- Co-ordinate and manage preparation and submission of
publications.
- Analyse data and prepare manuscripts that are suitable for
publication
- Assist with the preparation of grant applications as required
- Ensure that research being conducted is congruent with world
best practice in research
- Development of project protocol, procedures manual, data
collection tools and data quality plans with input and support of other
staff
- Organise training and other meetings re data collection and
conduct of relevant projects
- Ensure data preservation, backup and associated tasks are
achieved
- Make field trips within China when necessary
- Participate in team meetings and activities.
- Participate in objective setting, performance management,
review of the position and the planning and implementation of personal and
career development activities.
Skills, Knowledge, and Experience:
- Master’s or higher degree in health economics, economics,
statistics, biostatistics, or related area, or other relevant postgraduate
qualification.
- Clinical background in health care (such as cardiology,
neurology, diabetes, and nephrology) with post-graduate qualifications
preferred
- Advanced technical writing and oral presentation skills in
English
- Bilingual (Mandarin/English) with excellent communication
(written and verbal) skills
- Experience in preparing grant applications and/or manuscripts
- Solid understanding of research and related ethical principles
in the conduct of research
- Previous experience in managing and supporting collaborative
projects amongst a multidisciplinary team
- Ability to perform advanced health economic analyses
- Ability to work effectively in a small team environment
- Can function independently while knowing own limitations and when
referral of issues to supervisor is required
- Motivated and able to work independently and unsupervised,
ability to work on own initiative
- Results oriented and able to deliver on time
- Well organised and with good time management
- Attention to detail and rigorous methodological approach
- Flexibility and willingness to travel to meet with project
staff and work as required to meet timelines
- Flexibility and the ability to work effectively in an ambiguous
and continually changing environment
- Competence with computer programs (especially MS Office; MS
Word, MS Excel) and electronic communication (email and internet).
